The Washington Association of Landscape Professionals is excited to offer the LANDSCAPE TECHNICIAN BOOTCAMP training in partnership with the National Association of Landscape Professionals.

WALP will be offering the LANDSCAPE TECHNICIAN BOOTCAMP on March 29, 2024 at Lake Washington Insitute of Technology that will be comprehensive training for your staff and workforce.

Hands-On Training For Your Crews!

The new Landscape Technician Boot Camp will provide hands-on training for your crews. Based on the curriculum for the Landscape Industry Certified Technician Exterior exam, this industry-vetted training will help prepare your crews to work more effectively in 2023.  Boot Camp includes training in techniques and safety in 15 different competency areas organized into 3 disciplines presented in Spanish and English!

Bonus! This course also helps prepare people for the Landscape Industry Certified Technician Exterior exam. So, once you’ve trained your team, consider registering them to become certified through the National Association of Landscape Professionals (NALP).

Registration Costs:

WALP Members (First 5 registrants): $95.00 per person

WALP Members (6+ registrants): $80.00 per person

NON-WALP Members : $145.00 per person

EACH PARTICIPANT CAN ONLY SELECT ONE SECTION. THERE ARE 5 PROBLEMS WITHIN EACH SECTION. EACH PROBLEM IS AN 1 1/2 HOUR TRAINING.

IRRIGATION INSTALL & REPAIR SECTION

  • Program Controller (Advanced) – Learn how to program, troubleshoot, and repair controllers. Learn about rain sensor and installation.

  • Lateral Pipe Repair & Head Adjustment – Learn to cut and clean pipe wearing the appropriate PPE. Use of primer and glue correctly, testing the system for leaks and flushing the sprinkler heads correctly. Setting heads and final head adjustments, using different manufacture models.

  • Mainline (POC) & Lateral Install – Read and be familiar with plans and specifications. Accurate measurement and fittings. Correct direction and installation of valves and back flow preventer.

  • Trencher Equipment – Understand operator’s manuals and learn operation of the trencher or pipe puller at correct depth and how to plug the pipe.

  • Valve Repair & Wiring – Review and understand wiring and connections. Learn to run wire correctly to valves and operate controller to test. Troubleshoot and repair valve common problems.

    LANDSCAPE CONSTRUCTION SECTION

    • Rototiller & Sod InstallationLearn to understand the operator’s manual and perform equipment checks. Proper technic for operating equipment to move, dump, and load materials. Learn how to layout and install turf.

    • Paver Installation – Installation of pavers according to plan specifications. Learn proper technique for foundation, bed prep, edging install and adding sand or paver rock.

    • Plant ID – Learn how to identify evergreen and deciduous leaf arrangements, functional considerations like shade, sun, etc. Study common plant shapes and forms. Understand plant classifications like trees, shrubs and ground covers. Identify most common plants in our region.

    • Plant Layout & Tree Planting/Staking – Learn to understand and read landscape designs and specifications. Correctly place trees, shrubs and ground covers according to plan

    • Instrument – Learn how to use Instrument tools for setting elevations for onsite measurements.

     

    LANDSCAPE MAINTENANCE SECTION

    • Turf Fertilization & Aeration – Understanding what is in your bag of fertilizer, how to calibrate your spreader properly, and apply fertilizer to lawn and shrub areas.

    • Program Controller (Basic) – Learn how to program and manually operate common controllers to evaluate coverage and meet plant needs.

    • Pipe Repair & Head Adjustment – Learn to cut and clean pipe wearing the appropriate PPE. Use of primer and glue correctly, testing the system for leaks and flushing the sprinkler heads correctly. Setting heads and final head adjustments, using different manufacture models.

    • Pruning – Learn how to safely and properly use pruning equipment including pruners, loppers, pole-saws, chainsaws, and power shears. Learn the different types and timing of pruning.

    • Mower operation & Chain Saw & Edger & Trimer & Power Blower – Learn how to safely and properly use common lawn care equipment such as walk-behind and riding mowers, line-trimmers, power edgers, and aerators.
