About Kelly: When Kelly Mathison decided to start his own landscape construction business, he quickly came face-to-face with the hard realities of competition, time management, money management, and business development. He had excellent design skills, but his business skills? Unpolished, disorganized, and financially unsavvy.

Fortunately, Kelly is a quick learner. Putting his new knowledge to practice, he literally went door to door, creating business opportunities and contacts. His business, Legacy Landscapes, did $330,000 in sales in the first year. And that was in 2009, during the biggest economic downturn since the Great Depression.

Since then, Kelly has continued to learn, and Legacy Landscapes, has continued to grow. With minimal advertising, few referrals, and no subcontractors. The numbers and results speak volumes as to his systems, strategies and positive attitude:

  • Created $1.2 million in sales in both 2013 and 2014 with only six employees
  • Created $1.5 million in sales in 2015 with only seven employees
  • Maintained clean credit and purchased over $100,000 of equipment—using cash
